Roads
The roads are relatively good. The government has invested heavily in rebuilding the core roads network. The main highway from Bishkek to Osh is an excellent way to go through a mountainous region. Also, many other highways are being rehabilitated.
However, night-time driving is risky, especially due to poor lighting. The markings and road signs in some areas are absent. Traffic rules are in accordance with international law, but most often, especially on side roads and Osh provincial, most of the drivers do not fully comply.
The speed limit is 60 km/h in localities and 90 km/h outside localities. The law requires that car passengers to wear seat belts and motorcyclists to wear helmets. International Driving Permit is recognized in Kyrgyzstan.
At the same time, Kyrgyzstan has a border crossing point with China very well done, at Nura (above 3,000 m elevation), where international cargo traffic takes place excellent.
The total length of roads is 34,000 km, according to the Ministry of Transport of Kyrgyzstan. According to World Bank, 91% of roads are paved.
Transport contributes almost 2-3% of national GDP.
The most important roads in the country are:
- Bishkek – Osh – Irkeshtam – Kashgar (China)
- Bishkek – Naryn – Torugart – Kashgar (China)
- Bishkek – Balykchy – Karakol
- Bishkek – Talas
Because of the mountainous terrain, trucks are carrying more than 95% of goods in the country.
However, passenger transport is performed in particular by personal cars and mini buses.
